We all wonder what we’ll leave when we leave. Will we be missed? Will people wipe a tear when our name is mentioned? Will anybody show up at the funeral? Will there be a funeral? How much did you put in the plate the last time you found your way to service. And when was that by the way?
Greatest is whatever you burn in your crazy mind. All dictators think they’re great. Their opposition in the Stink Tank has a slightly different opinion. As boxers enter the ring their manage screams that they are the greatest into their ear.
The true measure of greatness comes when the news of your death calms down and your and your successes are measured against your failures. Any mark you left on the landscape is what’s left.
One measure is your ability to play the cards you are dealt. Did you get four aces or aces and 8’s? And did you play them anyway, or fold? It’s always easy to fold. Quitting is easy. The price of quitting is hard. The impending implosion of the universe and the end of all creation can only kill you once.
Kinky Friedman was one such man who’d play the aces and 8’s and his very audacity would cause others to fold. Kinky folded yesterday. After his traditional evening cigar he went to bed, and didn’t wake up. And an incredible number of people in Texas, myself being one, felt the loss. I, myself spent all day listening to his material, laughing anew at his irreverent graveyard humor.
Sitting up there with his 36 magnum
Laughing wildly as he bagged ‘em
A lot of his humor escaped American ears, just as the “slipper” joke in the movie “Kielia” did, but that’s ok. Americans miss a lot of things that Texans hold to be self evident. We caught it and that’s what mattered.
Kinky was a Jew. That has about as much importance to Texans as a preference in whiskey. But Kinky put it out there. His band, “The Jewboys” appeared nationally with such as Bob Dylan and Willie Nelson. I don’t know if Kinky was a religious Jew. But, how can you be a Jew and not be religious? Kinda like being from Mississippi and not being a member of the Klan if you ask me. Suffice to say Kinky played those aces and 8’s.
As always, we will have to let the dust settle before it can be determined if Kinky was great or not. He was great to me. I caught all his jokes. I never got to meet him although we both hung around Austin, but I appreciated him. When you’re an artist just one person liking your work is enough. I like your work, Kinky.
